Kick start a New Year’s resolution with free Zumba classes -- the latest fitness craze

Warren, RI – Zumba is sweeping the nation by storm and now 426 Fitness is offering free classes to help people kick start their New Year’s fitness regimes.

Zumba – a Latin-inspired cardio workout – is similar to dance aerobics but without the complicated step routines.

“What’s great about ZUMBA is people of all fitness levels can do it,” says Diane Stanzione, Class Fitness Director at 426 Fitness. “You don’t have to be a dancer, athlete or regular gym participant. You just feel the music and let your body move. Both men or women can have fun and you get real results.”

426 Fitness introduced Zumba in early 2010, and since then, member feedback has been overwhelming.

Now the fitness center is offering non-gym members the opportunity to give Zumba a try during the first six Thursdays of 2011 (January 13, 20, 27 and February 3, 10 and 17) at 7:00pm.

“We’re doing this because Zumba is so popular and so much fun, it’s also a way to invite people into our fitness center to experience what our members already know about 426 Fitness – that our facility, in this historic mill, is a really inviting place to workout,” says 426 Fitness owner Mark Lombari.

Zumba combines simple-to-follow step movements with Latin rhythms and offers an exciting hour of calorie-burning, body-energizing fun.

The cardio workout both tones and strengthens the core. The simple and repetitive Latin dance steps specifically target the abdominal muscles.

“It’s an easier way to exercise than other classes because of the pace – it’s like dancing – you just move your body to the music,” says Stanzione.

“I find that people who are overweight enjoy it the most. It’s fun for them and they go at their own pace, and they don’t feel self-conscious because there are other people just like them in the class.” Zumba is the creation of celebrity fitness trainer “Beto” Perez who, back in the 90s, improvised workout moves when he forgot to bring usual aerobics music to the gym and used his favorite Latin music instead. His Columbian students loved the change, and he developed the Zumba program, which today is offered in gyms around the globe.
